THANK YOU!

Dear MES Parents,
Thank you for all of those who came to the Spaghetti Dinner, which benefited the Sixth Grade class trip that we do every spring. We hope that you enjoyed the spaghetti and salad.  It was a lot of work to prepare for, but it was worth it.  We ended up raising over $800.  We couldn’t have done it without everyone’s support.  The sixth graders had lots of fun. Thank you- from the Sixth grade class

Track in the Woods project

Dear friends and athletes everywhere,
Welcome to our TRACK IN THE WOODS @ Harwood Union High School crowd funding page! Here's our vision and story.
OUR GOAL!
We are going to raise $400,000 to build a new, unique, environmentally friendly state-of-the-art 8 lane destination track and field complex – a TRACK IN THE WOODS - for Harwood Union High School in Vermont's Mad River Valley, the state of Vermont, and the Northeast as a whole.
We are starting our project with this $40,000 IndieGogo campaign to show the world that we've got grassroots support for this exciting and unique idea. Join us as a donor!
WHY A NEW TRACK?
Here's the story. Harwood Union High School’s current track is decades-old, covered with grass, and in dramatic disrepair. (CHECK OUT OUR FUN VIDEO). This, despite the fact that 10-15% of the Harwood student body participate in track and field related sports throughout the school year, AND Harwood's boys and girls cross country and track teams have won a total of THIRTY FIVE Vermont state Division II championships during the past FORTY years. “The Harwood Track & Field program prides itself on being an all inclusive program, allowing varying abilities to participate, while still being one of the top Teams in Vermont Division II, with multiple Team State Championships as well as numerous individual State titles,” explains head coach Taggert Haslam. "We always ask  - how hard are you willing to work for your teammates’ success?"
WHY NOW?
Given our incredible legacy at Harwood, we feel it is now time to build our high school, our towns, and our state a Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS that reflects the history, pride, and future prospects of our community – a track we can all celebrate and enjoy!
WHAT IS A "TRACK IN THE WOODS," EXACTLY?
Picture this. We imagine our Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS complex as a unique athletic facility in the heart of central Vermont that matches our region’s character. We will design and build our TRACK IN THE WOODS in an environmentally-friendly way: selectively cutting trees, harvesting on-site wood and stone for on-site facilities, and tapping into the local wisdom of our foresters, designers, architects, construction engineers, coaches, and athletes to create a destination complex of which all of us can be proud, AND a site that attracts athletes from all over the state and region.
$40,000 - IS THAT ENOUGH MONEY TO FUND THIS INCREDIBLE IDEA?
Not quite. We have a two-phase plan to fund the Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS, based on an estimated  $320,000 cost for the 400 meter track itself. (WONKY MATH ALERT: 8 lanes of 400 meters each = 3200 meters; so $40,000 buys a single lane, and $100 buys one meter of each lane).
So...
Phase 1: We will raise $40,000 from the HUHS running community, alumni, friends, families and supporters to support a single lane through our INDIE GOGO crowd-funding campaign. (September through December 2015).  ($100 buys a meter; all $100 donors or more will have their names affixed on a plaque that will grace the Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS entrance.)
Phase 2: We will raise $280,000 through business sponsorships and foundation partnerships to complete Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS funding for the track itself – businesses and foundations can buy /fund lanes or share the cost of lanes, and will be honored on our site in some public way. (January 2015 through May 2015).
Exciting, right?
Please give generously, and share our story with your family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones through email, social media like Facebook, and best of all, word of mouth.
We hope you will join us in making this exciting vision a reality!
Sincerely,
Friends of the Harwood TRACK IN THE WOODS Outreach Group

 Students learn about Stereotypes

Moretown Elementary School hosted three professionals on October 15 to tell children in grades K-3 about their jobs and to help answer the question:  "Are boys stronger than girls?"   The visiting professionals were Vermont Snowplow Truck Operator Ellen St. Marie,   State Police Detective Tara Thomas, and Vermont State Trooper, Lindsay O'Steen.   The presentation supported the gender stereotype work  children are engaged with during their wellness lessons with school counselor, Jason Stevenson.  Children heard that being strong is more than just muscle strength.

Children were able to look inside the snowplow truck and cruiser, along with pushing the siren buttons to finish up their time getting to know these women and the important jobs they do that require strength in so many ways.

5th Grade Students complete STE@M board games

Our 5th grade students completed their STE@M game design projects this past week.   Students followed the design/build process that any typical engineering would follow.   The class mission was to complete a "new" board game that could be played by grade 1 and 2 level students.  We have placed a short slide show below to give examples of their finished work.  The 5th grade STE@M students will transition next week to understanding solar power and utilizing robotics to complete simple tasks.

Help needed with after school playground supervision
As you are aware, the new town office building is under construction.  The work site is off limits to all families and students after school for safety reasons.  There is a snow fence indicating danger zones, but there is not 24 hours surveillance of the area.

Given our reduction in playground space all playground activities occur on the area immediately behind the school during and after school.    Please be mindful that our MECA program utilizes our existing playground under limitations set by State of Vermont.  They must focus their  time and energy to the students under their direct supervision and cannot be expected to supervisor other children not in the program given our license limits   We ask that parents/guardians provide supervision for their children after school to assist us with this supervision.  Thank you for your understanding and help with this situation.

MRV BASKETBALL NEEDS  COACHES

The Mad River Youth Basketball League is looking for coaches for the upcoming season beginning in December. We usually have multiple coaches on each team so the work load can be shared.  Teams usually have once game a week and two practices.  We also provide a training session for all coaches.

Open House/Pasta Dinner Reminder

Hello Moretown School Families,

Reminder:  Open House for our school will be held this Thursday, October 8th, 6:00 - 7:00.  We welcome all families to come and see our classrooms, meet our teachers and get an idea about what your students will be experiencing this coming school year.

This is will our first year that we will host a school wide "Pasta Dinner" starting at 5:00.  The cost for the pasta dinner is $5.00/person and $20.00 family.  The menu includes: Italian Salad, Pasta, Marinara Sauce, Bread and Butter, cookies or brownies and drinks.  (we will have some gluten free pasta on hand).  This will be a mostly outside event(picnic style) as we have a very limited seating area.  The pasta dinner is  fundraiser for our end of the year 6th grade experience.

We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday evening.

Greetings from the world of Physical Education!

I am writing to tell you that we have had a great start to the year so far! We have learned over 30 new tag games, and we have been preparing ourselves to be good sports for a variety of games and different aspects of life. We just finished fall fitness testing, which is a variety of tests that measure aerobic endurance, core strength, upper body strength, and flexibility. This week we are beginning a unit on Kinball, to save you on a lengthy explanation, ask your kids all about it!

I am also informing families about the self assessments that have been sent home. These are done as often as possible at the end of each class. The assessments are mainly focused on behavior in PE. The headings directly correlate to their PE repost cards. The headings are safety, cooperation/sportsmanship, effort/perseverance, and listening/following directions. If a student has a reminder for any of the headings, they receive a 2. If the student gets 3 reminders, or a break, they get a 1. If your child receives frequent reminders or breaks on a daily basis, it means they are really struggling with that aspect of behavior. Receiving daily reminders is not meeting the expectation, and your child could receive a 1 on their report card for that category. If your child did not bring theirs home, I have a personal      record of each student with how many reminders they have received, so feel free to reach out to me if you are interested.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this process.

Thanks so much, and I look forward to a great year!

Ally Bataille

Mad River Soccer Announcement

 MAD RIVER SOCCER ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCEMENT

MRVSA will be holding skills assessment for those that wish to play soccer in the Spring of 2016 on Sunday October 18th at Mad River Park. This assessment will be run by Don Haddox (HUHS soccer coach) and current fall coaches. Times as follows:
U10 Girls (Grades 3 and 4) 10:00-11:00am
U12 Girls (Grades 5 and 6) 11:00-12:00pm
U10 Boys (Grades 3 and 4) 12:00-1:00pm
U12 Boys (Grades 5 and 6) 1:00-2:00pm
If you have a player who wishes to be placed on a team for the spring season, please email us at registrar.mrvsa@gmail.com with your child’s name, town and grade indicating whether or not your child will be able to attend the skills assessment.  For those who are unable to attend the assessment it is still important for you to indicate your child’s interest in playing in the spring now so we know to place them on a team. Attending the skills assessment is not a commitment to play; once we have teams created (by the end of October), you will then be sent an email with further information and the opportunity to register your child to play or decline at that time.
Players should bring a #4 ball and a water bottle. Shin guards required.
PLEASE NOTE: There will be soccer in the spring for younger groups (Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grades 1 and 2), but there will not be skills assessment for these ages. Information on the registration of these age groups will be distributed in March of 2016
