Moretown School Update, March 29, 2018

A rabbit was spotted
in a Math class today.... interesting timing.

HUUSD Survey Results are Out!

The results of the Jan/Feb school board survey are out! Please visit the Community Engagement Committee page (https://wwsu.org/community-engagement-committee) to download and read it. Yes, we know the report is very LONG! ...but consider that over 150 pages are verbatim answers. We want to offer transparency and honor people's specific words, but if you want the "cliff notes," the first 25 pages or so will give you a good picture.

The HUUSD board would like to offer sincere thanks to everyone who participated in the survey, to everyone who will read the full report or even just the first few pages, and to everyone who will continue engaging with us as we go through this exciting and difficult challenge ahead of us.

Mad Valley Runners 2018 Open to boys and girls grades 3-6.  We look forward to helping your kids develop/maintain a love of running.  Parents and  kids  are invited join us,  Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30- 4:00 for some fun runs on the Mad River Path trails. Last year 17 students and 5 adults enjoyed our program. Having adult running partners for the kids is essential for the program's success. No experience necessary!  We encourage the kids to run at a pace that is comfortable for them, take walk breaks if needed, and support their friends as they do the same.  As their strength and endurance grows they find pleasure in pushing their own limits a bit. Our program is intended for kids that actually want to run during our allotted time.  We will include, long runs, tag games and for those who wish, sprint races.  If this appeals to your child please encourage them to sign up. Runs will begin as weather and volunteer support allows, usually in early April. Pasta with Pipsqueaks: Sunday, April 8th, 3-5pm, at the Moretown School. Come learn to make pasta and let us clean up the mess! Making dough from scratch and creating different shapes is a great way to inspire your kids to join you in preparing dinner. Stay and enjoy the fruits of our labor with a simple dinner afterwards, as due to the challenges of transporting fresh pasta we won't be sending any home. You and your child will love the process AND the delicious result. Workshop is free however you must register by contacting moretownlibrary@gmail.com or 496-9728. Adults without children are also more than welcome to attend.

Move it and READ!, Thursday, April 12th, 3pm, Moretown Library. Let's face it; we all get a little antsy from time to time. The April book will be Ms. Bixby’s Last Day by John David Anderson, which is suggested for grades 5-8 and is on the 2017 Dorothy's List. EPIC ENDING TO A GREAT SEASON!

The PTN would like to send a HUGE shout out to our Winter Sports Program volunteers.  Without their help, we couldn't have enjoyed so many beautiful days in the snow.  We had a great season, saw a lot of progression, and the kids had a great time on the mountain.  We would also like to give special recognition to Pam Nelson, whose tireless effort, communication, and positivity made it such an incredible success! caption

Harwood Union Music Department is thrilled to be hosting the Hofstra Chamber Choir during their spring concert tour. They will be performing at the Waterbury UCC on Friday, March 23rd at 7:30pm. This choir from Hofstra University in New York provides an excellent display of artistry through diverse programming of choral works. They are the smallest and most select of Hofstra's choral ensembles and is comprised of some of the best singers at the University both in and out of the music department. Their director, David Fryling, is a renowned conductor who recently served as President of ACDA's Eastern Division, and won the American Prize in Conducting in 2 categories: Community Chorus and Colleges & Universities. It is truly an honor to have Dr. Fryling and the Hofstra Chamber Choir join us here in Vermont! And, as if this was not exciting enough, Harwood's own chamber choir, "I Cantori" will be performing with them that night after attending a workshop with Dr. Fryling in the afternoon.  There is a $5 suggested donation to cover costs. Redesign Q&A MARCH 20, 6pm
How can we have healthy class sizes to improve quality but also allow us to plan more predictably and save money? Do we need to combine grades that are currently in different buildings? What are the implications of closing a school? Can we take advantage of efficiencies or cohort grouping to support more opportunities in and out of the classroom? What are the key drivers to providing excellent education and lowering costs? These are the questions of school redesign.

The HUUSD board has already started exploring some of these questions but is in the very early stages of the process. Although we have not even finalized a timeline, we are holding a public Q&A session on Tuesday, March 14 as part of our commitment to engaging the public early and often.

Come find out some of the information we have explored to date and what our next steps are. Please also come with your ideas for saving money, improving quality and/or equity, and for supporting healthy community conversations as we progress through the process.
