School Board

SUBJECT: May HUUSD meetings: Community Participation Sought!

Dear HUUSD school communities,

Instead of our usual “board meeting recap” for this week, we want to let you know of the many ways to stay informed and engaged as the board moves forward with district plan and bond work, as well as development of a new vision statement for the district.

1 - Keep track of where we are in our process on the “District Plan/Bond Project” page of the HUUSD website.

2 - Read the report prepared by HUUSD Director of Finance, Michelle Baker, on Projected Cost Per Equalized Pupil and Homestead Tax Rates, found online here. Hard copies of this report will be available at all HUUSD Town Offices by May 17.

3 - Watch the May 15 or May 22 meeting videos which include the level service projections presentation by the Director of Finance (noted in #2 above), available through Mad River Television./)
4 - Attend our May 22 meeting at 6:00 in the Harwood Library. The first 90 minutes will be a public forum for community members to hear about the district’s level service projections (noted in #2 above) and share their impressions and questions in small group discussions with board members.

5 - Email the full board with thoughts and questions at cen-huusdboard@wwsu.org

6 - Subscribe to receive email updates directly by clicking on the News Subscriptions link found at wwsu.org or by clicking here.

7 - Please also join one of our Visioning Community Conversations. Next week, we’ll hold two conversations on Tuesday, May 21: 9:00 - 10:30 am at the Waitsfield Town Office and from 6:00 - 7:30 pm at Warren Elementary School.  Community members are invited to come to any conversation that can fit in their schedule, regardless of their town of residence. RSVPs requested, but not required.

8 - Moving forward there will be additional opportunities for engagement and input as we work to develop a PreK through 12 district plan that will get us to a bond vote for Town Meeting Day 2020. Please refer to the timeline on PreK-12/Bond webpage, meeting agendas and board packets for information on upcoming work. As always these will be posted within 48 hours of our meetings, which are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. Please refer to the HUUSD events calendar found on the main page of the district website to confirm meetings or determine when others might be held.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support.

The HUUSD board of directors

  • This week in library we read the book Hug Time by Patrick McDonnell. It is a lovely book and the kids really seemed to enjoy it. One of the messages in the story was about how we can each make the world a better place. After we finished reading the kids were asked what was one thing could they do to make the world a better place. Here is what they came up with…

Putting bottles and cans into the recycling.
    Ride a unicorn.

    Help clean up the Earth.
    Caring about the Earth.
    Loving the Earth.
Being a superhero and saving the world.
    Help seeds grow.
Being a superhero and making no cyclones in Kansas.
Help vacuum and with house chores.

Incredible Donation
An amazing thing happened Friday night!  All Four valley PTOs were gratuitously chosen by Lawson's Finest Liquids to be the recipients of the amazing tip program. For two weeks, four PTOs were described to visitors, many out of state, by the amazing staff here in order to garner interest in supporting each of our local nonprofits. The wonderful things that can be accomplished with this money are going to be incredibly special and make an impact. But perhaps just as wonderful was the collaboration time, time spent with the Presidents of each valley PTO discussing experiences and brainstorming and how we can continue to get together. Lawson’s was the catalyst to this wonderful collaboration and it will certainly become something we do more of (the amazing beer helps that!)!

A heartfelt thank you to the Lawson’s, especially Karen, who made this happen and appreciated how special it would be to have all the valley PTOs together in this!
