Moretown School Update, March 9, 2017

A Moretown student participating in a
banned activity...  The principal declared "no reading allowed"

Dear Moretown families,

March 14th is Pi Day (3.14) and to celebrate we are having a pie reading celebration!  If our school reads 30,000 pages in one week, everyone will get pie and Mr. Pierson will get a pie in the face!! A chart will be sent home with your child to track the number of pages (s)he reads each day.  Every page read at home counts twice! The student book committee will do the doubling when tallying up pages so please have students only record actual number of pages read.  Please initial the chart to verify that your child has read their pages. We are encouraging any kind of reading. Students can count pages read in any type of book or if it was read out loud to them.

We hope that this will be a fun filled week that inspires us all!  Thank you for helping our community grow as readers! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me: ewood@wwsu.org.

Sincerely,
Emily Wood, Moretown School Librarian

Books Are Banned!

Mr. Pierson has temporarily banned reading books until March 19th.  The library and all its books are off limits until March 19th.

Dear Friends and Families,

Our schools are clearly one of the greatest assets of our communities. There is much that is very good in our current schools and we should be thoughtful about insuring we don't lose "the good stuff".  At the same time, there has been great attention to the ever increasing costs of public education in our state. How much is too much? What might we do to maintain quality but be more cost effective? Finally, as we consider constant improvement, are there reorganizational steps we could take that might help us better meet student needs, improving upon our best practices and student achievement and/or offering greater opportunities?

From Front Porch Forum posts to conversations I've had with some of you, there is strong interest in better understanding the dialogue and process around long-range planning for our schools.  Next Wednesday, March 14, at 6 p.m., the Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) board is hosting a Q & A on these topics. The forum will be broadcast on Mad River Television and is open to the public. Additionally, it is anticipated that similar forums will occur again as this work continues to evolve.  Please see the invitation from the board below. I am appreciative of the support of public education and the thoughtful civic engagement of this community; I encourage you all to learn more about this topic, becoming informed so that you can contribute to this work to ensure a sustainable, high quality educational system.
Respectfully,    Mr. P.

Redesign Q&A MARCH 14
How can we have healthy class sizes to improve quality but also allow us to plan more predictably and save money? Do we need to combine grades that are currently in different buildings? What are the implications of closing a school? Can we take advantage of efficiencies or cohort grouping to support more opportunities in and out of the classroom? What are the key drivers to providing excellent education and lowering costs? These are the questions of school redesign.

The HUUSD board has already started exploring some of these questions but is in the very early stages of the process. Although we have not even finalized a timeline, we are holding a public Q&A session on Wednesday, March 14 as part of our commitment to engaging the public early and often.

Come find out some of the information we have explored to date and what our next steps are. Please also come with your ideas for saving money, improving quality and/or equity, and for supporting healthy community conversations as we progress through the process.
