Moretown School Update January 18, 2019

School News:

  • Next week is a short one, with Monday off for the holiday and Tuesday off for students, while teachers and staff spend the day in inservice.
  • Report cards will go home with students on Thursday January 24.

  • The first week of the Outdoor Sports Program at Sugarbush was a hit!  It was so exciting to watch all the students.  Some were learning, while others were whizzing around the mountain like pros, but all with smiles on their faces.

From the Health Office:
  • Flu:
    • The incidence of flu is rising in our state.  The Centers for Disease Control recommends that anyone age 6 months and older get a flu vaccine to prevent the flu.  It's not too late to schedule a flu vaccine for your child with his or her primary care provider.
    • Check out this flu decision chart from UVM Health Network- CVMC to help make the best decision for you and your family.  Your primary care physician can help guide you as well.
  • When to keep your child home:
    • If your child has a fever greater than 100, please keep them home. Children need to be fever free for 24 hours without the use of medication in order to return to school. If your child has vomited in the previous 24 hrs, please keep them at home as well.

Harwood students will be leading all participants through a review of Harwood's 2017 YRBS (Youth Risk Behavior Survey) data. We will look at the data relative to Harwood's collective strengths and challenges with a specific focus on how we can address the identified problems. Please join us! A similar workshop has taken place for Harwood students, so we excited to have the communities input as well! Food will be provided, so please RSVP if you are able to attend. Babysitting will be available if requested by 2/15.
If you have any questions or would like to RSVP, please contact: Tara Cariano at tcariano@wwsu.org

Dear Mad River Youth Lacrosse Parents,

Registration is now open for the 2019 Spring Lacrosse Season @ www.madriverlax.com

We have had a few issues again this year with registration via our website, but please give it another shot and let us know if you have any questions. As a reminder, here are the details for the 2019 Lacrosse season.

Mad River Valley Youth Lacrosse will offer both girls and boys lacrosse again this year. There are three separate grade levels including 3rd-4th, 5th-6th, and 7th-8th. Equipment will be provided for 3rd-4th-grade players as supplies allow. We will also offer a Sunday morning program for 1st-2nd-grade boys and girls that we call “Chill Lax.” First timers are welcome at every level.

Registering at www.madriverlax.com as early as possible is highly recommended, as teams often fill to capacity. Player space is open on a first-come, first-serve basis. Team assignments will be provided by March 1, 2019. Coaches encourage athletes who might play other spring sports to try lacrosse. Our season is short and we try our best to accommodate other spring sports schedules.

Official outdoor practices are held at Mad River Park, beginning in Mid April, while pre-season indoor sessions may be scheduled by team coaches. Games will be held from the first week of May through mid-June.

Founded in 2008, Mad River Valley Youth Lacrosse is a community-based, volunteer, non-profit recreational organization. Mad River Valley Youth Lacrosse is a developmental organization and is committed to providing a positive, team-oriented athletic experience. Mad River Valley Youth Lacrosse is affiliated with the Northern Vermont Youth Lacrosse League (Boys), and the Northern Vermont Girls Youth Lacrosse League. Coaches complete required certification through US Lacrosse, and player insurance is provided through US Lacrosse.

2. Engaged in in-depth discussion about HUUSD budget.

4. Moved to accept EPC committee’s recommendation to direct HUUSD administration to determine if CBMS can “house” all 7/8 graders, as well as W/D 5th and 6th graders. Accepted the recommendation with an amendment to ask the superintendent to put initial calculations of what the administration already knows in writing to help the EPC determine next steps. BOD also directed EPC to determine list of variables to consider in determining operational expenses and/or cost savings.

All that Jazz:
Hello Moretown Band Parents!

As you know, the Moretown ski and snowshoe program begins this week on Tuesday. We have reconfigured our approach to band and lessons for this period to make room for this great opportunity our students have to learn outdoor skills that, I believe, are essential to getting through VT winters!

In a nutshell, students will be need their instruments only on Wednesdays for the duration of the ski program. There are three exceptions to this, and I will privately email families of those three students. So, if you don't get an email from me about keeping a Tuesday lesson time, your child will only need to bring their instruments in on Wednesdays.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you!

School News:

Looking forward to a great start to 2019!

I Heart Art:

  • I got to cover ART last week while Mrs. Harvey was out!
  • The first and second graders were building with rods and connectors.  They are quite the architects.  Most of all I enjoyed watching them communicate their plans and intentions, listen to one another and work collaboratively.

Notes from the Health Office :

  • We have had a couple of confirmed cases of Hand Foot and Mouth (HFMD) here at MES.  It is a common early childhood illness, but can also effect older children and adults.  Here is some information about symptoms and treatment/prevention.
