Quick reminder, there is no school this Friday November 11, 2022 for staff inservice.  

Winter Sports Program is gearing up for an awesome season!  Please read this info and return forms ASAP.

November Conferences

These will be offered from Nov 14-18.  Each teacher has a different schedule.  Students are expected to attend conferences.  Childcare (for siblings) will be available in the Library on Thursday 11/17/22 evening from 2:30-7:00.

• From the Online Scheduler Home Page
• Choose your student’s school from the drop down list and click “GO”
• Enter the school password: 3742
• Enter your student’s “Student ID”. If you do not know their Student ID, use the LOOKUP STUDENT ID button to access the system.
• Verify the student’s birth date
• A list of your student’s teachers will be displayed. Check the box next to the name of your child's classroom teacher.
• If you have more than one student in the school you can see all of your students’ teachers’ schedules at one time by answering YES to this question “Do you want to schedule conferences for another student?” then repeat the steps above for your other students. If you only have one student, answer NO to that question.
• You will then see the available time slots for each teacher you selected.
• Select the times that work best for your schedule.
• Enter your email address (recommended) if you would like an email reminder sent to you. (Your email address is kept private.)
• Once you have finished you can confirm your appointment details and print your conference schedule.
• Write down the Confirmation Number (you will need this number to cancel your appointment).

Mix-It-Up Lunches

We have been doing Mix-It_up Lunches on Fridays with the 5/6 classes.  It gives them all a chance to sit next to someone new and learn about each other.  This week the topic was superheroes.  Each group had to nominate their vote for best superhero and tell why.  Who is your favorite superhero and why?  Great topic for the dinner table this week.

PE

Our new gym floor is now official.  PE classes may need to wait until Tuesday or Wednesday to enjoy it as the paint cures.

Library

We had a super successful Book Fair this week... the most successful Mrs. Willard has ever seen here at Moretown! Also thanks to the "book fairy" every student was able to pick out a book to bring home.  Nice job Mrs. Willard!

This week at ECO

At 5/6 ECO this week they played a new game with Karen, shared nature notes, hiked to base camp, broke into groups to clean up the base camp and fire pit, wrote new poems (Acrostic and Mesostic poems), and ended with some time at their sit spots. Overall, a great day outside.

Snowboard with Green Mountain Academy

Green Mountain Academy, a non-profit snowboard and freeski club, has openings for snowboarders on our Team (ages 10+) and in our Jr. Development (7-9) program. Build fundamental skills, learn new tricks, compete, and have fun with our highly skilled coaches. Kids Cooking Classes

Please join us for lantern building workshops for the 13th annual River of Light Lantern Parade, held on Saturday, December 3rd. MARVELOUS MAGIC is the theme this year! The event is made possible by our sponsors: Waterbury Winterfest, The Alchemist, Billings Mobil, and the HUUSD. All workshops are free to attend and space is limited. Pre-registration is required.

10:00-4:00 - Brookside Primary School Gymnasium - These lanterns are made from willow, rattan, and paper and take two full days to complete. Previous experience is recommended.

10:00-3:00 - Brookside Primary School Gymnasium - These lanterns are made from willow, rattan, and paper - and will take the entire time to create.

Community Lantern Building - November 13th
10:00-12:00 or 1:00-3:00 - These lanterns are made from vellum paper and take approximately 2 hours to complete.

Hello from the HUUSD Social Emotional Learning Task Force,

Did you know that HUUSD has a district-wide task force dedicated solely to Social and Emotional Learning? This task force is committed to providing educators and families information, resources and ideas to support students' social/emotional well being and overall wellness.

This October we are focusing on the theme of Self-Awareness and what it means to be self aware. Being self aware is being able to identify one’s own emotional state and needs related to this. We all teach this often and use many different tools to help students identify how they are feeling and what they need. Here are a couple ideas about how to try at home this month:

For younger children:

Need a book to read with young students about their feelings? Try one of these: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst; All My Feelings at Home: Ellie’s Day by Susan Conlin and Susan Levine Friedman; or Amanda Pig on Her Own by Jean Van Leeuwen.


Here’s a mindful activity that increases self awareness and can be used at home or at school: Roses, Thorns and Buds.

For middle schoolers:

Offer your child your child opportunities to check in regularly. Here are some check in protocols we use at school that you might adapt for home.


For high schoolers:

Provide opportunities for and model healthy habits to help these young adults recognize their emotions and develop healthy regulation strategies.

• Be good to your body. Get moving and develop a health and wellness plan.
• Keep your bedtime the same. Sleep helps restore and relax your mind and body. A good sleep routine keeps you healthy.
• Eat regularly, and choose nutritious meals.
• Be kind to your mind by practicing self-care. Plug into tools to help you de-stress and take care of yourself
• Engage your mind in your favorite activities. Schedule time for yourself to participate in the activities you enjoy the most. Whatever your thing is — reading a book, painting, playing an instrument, streaming your favorite music, dancing, writing, singing, etc. — do it, enjoy it, and you’ll feel better.
• Help others. Helping others will bring you happiness. Consider surprising a neighbor by doing yard work or leaving groceries on their porch (while keeping your social distance).

Bike week was AWESOME!  

Please plan to pick up bikes today.  With Halloween next Monday, the town hopes to use the rec field for a story walk.

Library

The Scholastic Book Frair officially opens at 7 am Monday morning.

• Families may visit together from 7:00-7:40 (before school officially starts) each morning or 2:30-3:00 (after dismissal). Please let the office know you are headed to the library. Families are also invited Halloween night to shop together.

• This year every student will receive a Free book! (price must be $10 or less)

Hi families,

With the colder weather setting in but it is important for everybody to make sure they’re updated on all vaccines that are recommended from the health department. Below is a summary of what the health department recommends and where to find places to get your family vaccine’s. Let’s all work together to keep MES as safe as possible. Thanks

• The Vermont Department of Health is partnering with communities to provide walk-in clinics to make it easier for Vermonters to get COVID-19 and flu vaccines.

• Flu shots are recommended for anyone ages 6 months and older.
• COVID-19 primary series vaccines for everyone ages 6 months and older.
• Updated (bivalent) boosters for everyone ages 5 years and older who completed their primary COVID-19 vaccine series or received their last booster or additional dose at least two months ago.

The party is going to be great! It starts at 5:00 and then enjoy some trick or treating in the village.  Thanks to those who have signed up to help out and who have donated candy.  We will plan to deliver candy Monday morning to the neighbors so it's not too late to donate.

Community Outdoor Portrait Day

We have scheduled another one of our Outdoor Portrait Days this coming Sunday, October 10/30 from ~ 11-3pm in Montpelier, with the possibility of another event in the Mad River Valley in early November, too. (We are always available for private and small-group/family/senior on our scenic property/outdoor studio in Moretown, too) Please follow the links below to sign-up and for more info. If time slots before 11 or after 3 are the only option for you, please contact us. Our program will be very similar to past years, but please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or ideas to share. We are also available for a more customized photo session at your home, on our property and outdoor studio in Moretown, or just about anywhere you have in mind.

KITs started this week.  We kicked it off in the gym, where students found their group-marked by a native Vermont animal.  Each group found their space to meet and got know each other a bit. Looking forward to many more Wednesday morning groups!

5/6 Mix-it-Up lunch Fridays

PE

Hey everyone!
On Monday we are beginning our biking unit. It would be great if students could bring their helmet to the school for the week. We have a fleet of bikes at school for students to use, along with helmets for those who need to borrow one. While the bike fleet is pretty spectacular, we do not have unlimited bikes in each size, especially in the smallest and largest sizes. If it’s possible for your family to bring your kids bikes to the school to use, that would be incredibly helpful! Bikes can be dropped off on the ball field. If you’d like your child’s bike to be locked, you need to provide the lock with your child, and they will need to be able to operate it on their own. All bikes are welcome to stay at the school for the week.

pre-k will also be part of this on their PE day! I’ll have strider bikes for anyone who is still learning. I forgot to mention no bikes with training wheels are needed! We’re going to practice balancing!

The Moretown Library is excited to announce that we will once again host a story & pumpkin walk for Halloween, with a light up display at dusk for all to enjoy. Last year we had over 30 unique Jack O' Lanterns to share, and hope for even more this time around so we are also looking for donations of your carved creations to help create a fantastic display. Donations can be dropped off at the library anytime we are open during the week of 10/24 up through Halloween day.

Bobcat Bulletin 10/17/22- bonus edition

 

Hello Moretown Families,

I realized I missed a few exciting announcements on my Saturday edition of the Bobcat Bulletin... Here's a few items for you to know:

1. Walk to School was a huge success!!  Thanks to Melanie Grubman and Localmotion, to the Moretown Store, to the PTO for donuts, to First Student for making a new bus stop, for all our family and staff volunteers who walked with us, and for everyone who waved and smiled at us.  It was a great community morning!

2. You may hear about KITs starting this week.  KITS are mini advisory groups here at Moretown that will take place Wednesday mornings for students k-6th grade.  It is important for students to be here ontime (by 7:40) each day, but will be especially important on KIT days.  We don't want any students to miss out!!  Ask you child on Wednesday evening about their KIT experience.

3. LOST and FOUND is a little full already.  With chilly mornings and warmer afternoons, students are shedding layers and leaving them behind.  Take a look at these pictures and let me know if you see anything that belongs to your family.  Also, please mark all clothing with your child's name.  That way when it is found we can get it right to them.
