PTO News
'The Vermont Cookie Love Fundraiser is BACK! Your child will have a red file folder with paperwork for the Fundraiser went home this week. In this packet, there is the Cookie order form AND the cookie codes (what each code means for type of cookies!). Attached to this email is a copy of the letter that is also going home in the folder.
The fundraiser will run through Friday January 31, 2020. Please make sure all packets are back by then! Pickup of dough is tentatively planned for Feb 12/13 (just in time for Valentine's Day) but the PTO will share more details as the time gets closer.

Dear parents,
As you may be aware, Moretown Elementary's ECO program (Educating Children Outdoors) has been serving our PreK-2nd graders for almost a decade.
The program however is facing funding shortfalls for the 2020/2021 year and in turn, a dedicated team of parents and teachers is spearheading a fundraising effort in conjunction with hosting an outdoor festival to immerse the community with this valuable program and ensure it's funding for years to come.
We would very much appreciate your assistance in realizing our goals on both fronts.
THE ECO FOREST FESTIVAL will be held on February 15th from 2pm to 4pm in the outdoor ECO classrooms at Moretown Elementary School.
Much of the event will highlight the ECO curriculum in the outdoor classrooms, plus include activities like sledding, food and drink prepared over campfires and much more. This is a free, outdoor event and all are welcome - so please join us!

Come to the MECA Children’s Clothing Swap!
Swap Date,Time & Location: Saturday, February 8th, 10 am - 12 pm at the Moretown Elementary School
Help out your neighbors and yourselves by bringing your child’s outgrown clothing or shopping for new-to-you gear at the MECA Children’s Clothing swap! We’re looking for infant through 6th Grade clothing sizes in good condition that can be swapped on the day of the event. Bring your children’s old clothing, pay a $5 entry fee, and fill a bag of new clothing for your child.
No clothes to swap? No problem! Simply pay the $5 entry fee and fill a bag full of new-to-you clothing for your child. Don’t need any new clothes but want to donate your child’s too-small items? Feel free to stop by with gently-worn and like-new items to pass on!
Here is a list of what to bring to trade (warm clothing for ages infant-6th grade): Long sleeves and long sleeve onesies for babies, long johns, warm socks, boots, hats, gloves, jackets, sweaters, snow pants, sneakers

Waitsfield School & PTA is happy to present an evening with Scott Noyes as he discusses topics that we all work through as parents and educators: power struggles, conflict and anger. Through this presentation, which will include opportunities for open discussion and questions, Scott will provide guidance on how to respond to these challenges in a way that ultimately helps our children (and us) grow. Power struggles come from a variety of components; fatigue, stress, frustration, helplessness, the quest for autonomy and power. This presentation looks at avoiding responses that provide short term relief, but long-term grief. Valuable lifelong lessons are learned from childhood disputes. Helping children learn to disagree is a skill many of us have never been exposed to. This part of the presentation stresses resolving conflict through medication, triads, and supportive intervention. - Jump into the magical world of Aesop’s Fables, as Michael and Taryn help to create an original spin on a classic tale. Students of this class will be part of a Spring Musical Production. Students will learn a varied palate of theatrical dance and choreography. Blending some more traditional Broadway style jazz, both classic and contemporary, as well as learning some tap, modern, and even ballroom at times.
- Students will do daily physical and vocal warmup’s and have dedicated vocal training time with Michael. We will also be really focusing on skill building this semester, with body and spatial awareness as well as learning some great voice, speech and acting techniques.

Act the Song- Michael:
- This course focuses on what goes into healthy singing with fun vocal exercises and ideas that will help build a solid technical foundation. Additionally, we will play theater games and improvisations that encourage young actors to think creatively and make inspired dramatic choices. The acting and singing skills gained will be applied to various Broadway songs for both groups and individuals. Topics such as tips for a successful musical audition and what it takes to be a professional musical theater performer will be covered as well. Whether you're a seasoned thespian or new to the stage, this class will give you the tools to become a more confident and engaging performer. Come play with us!

HUUSD Board Meeting Recap 1/22
Dear members of our six town community,
At our last meeting on January 22, 2020, of the Harwood Unified Union School District (HUUSD) Board:
- The Student Representatives shared their monthly report;
- Michelle Baker, Director of Finance & Operations, gave a brief presentation on options for funds for the lease and installation of the annex at Crossett Brook Middle School and on the warnings for Town Meeting Day; and
- Nicole Mace, Esq. explained and answered questions from board members regarding the two petitions to amend the HUUSD Articles of Agreement that were submitted to the board.
The Board took action on the five (5) items below:
- Approved the following items as part of the consent agenda: Approve: Minutes of 1/15/2020; Accept: Voucher 1175 equaling $90,652.55.
- Approved payment of each town’s election expenses for June 9, 2020 bond vote.
- Amended last week’s motion to reflect the addition of the cost of the annex: adopt Budget #5 with a total expenditure of $39,772,342 for fiscal year 2021 which would include combining all 7th and 8th graders at Crossett Brook Middle School and moving Moretown Elementary’s 5th and 6th graders to Crossett Brook Middle School (or IDC).
- Rejected the petitioned article calling for voter approval of school configuration because the school board, not the electorate, has the authority to make policy and to decide how the buildings within their district will be used and managed.
- Rejected the petitioned article calling for voter approval of school closures because the petitioned article includes a very broad definition of school closure that would grant the electorate authority to dictate matters that are clearly within the board’s authority to decide, namely grade configuration and the use of school classrooms and buildings.
- Approved the warning for the Board’s Annual Meeting and articles for Town Meeting Day as drafted and presented by Finance Director Michelle Baker at the 1/22/20 meeting.
Further communication about the budget and petition decisions will be coming from the Board within the next week.
