Notes from the Health Office
  • Vision Screenings Nurse Claire has been able to complete our annual vision screenings in the last couple weeks.  The new screening machine is pretty amazing, and the screening took mere moments to complete for each student (grades preK, K, 1, 3, 5).  She will reach out to families individually if there are any abnormalities or concerns.
  • If you or your child are going for a COVID test because you are sick, please call your primary care or the COVID hotline/testing line at 802 371 5310 to schedule your testing. They will decide where you should go for testing and most likely will set you up with an appointment to go to the CVMC-run testing site at the Acute Respiratory Clinic on the Barre-Montpelier Road. This is a precaution to maintain the safety of personnel working or volunteering at the off-site testing centers where they do not have as much access to PPE.

Harwood chapter of the Youth Lobby
is partnering with an organization called TreePlenish to offset school paper usage by planting trees in the community.

On April 24th, 2021, volunteers will be planting trees at the homes of anyone who requests a tree. It is important to note that anyone who requests a tree who does not feel comfortable with volunteers planting the trees may choose to pick up the saplings to plant on their own, but that all volunteers will be wearing masks and social distancing and we will require homeowners to do so as well when interacting with the volunteers.

Trees will cost $5 each and we are offering both silver maples and eastern redwoods. Residents can request a tree at our website: https://www.tree-plenishevents.org/harwood

We are passionate about student agency and affecting change in our local community and want to do our part to build a more sustainable future. We hope that this event can bring awareness to our community about our impact on the climate and help encourage the community to make positive change.

School Counselor's Corner:

In wellness classes this year the focus has been on the Zones of Regulation. The Zones is an approach used to teach self-regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete colored zones: blue, green yellow and red.

The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.

The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone.  This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.

The Red Zone is used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions.  A person may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, devastation, or terror when in the Red Zone.

The Yellow Zone is also used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions, however one has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone.  A person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness when in the Yellow Zone.

Students across the grades have learned how to identify what zone they are in by paying attention to their bodies,  the importance of matching their state of alertness to the situation and what tools they can use to manage their alertness. For example, rapid breathing may indicate that the person is in the yellow zone and could cool down by taking some deep breaths or counting to ten. For more information, check out my blog: Counseling Commons @ Fayston/Moretown. You can also reach me with questions by email: jstevenson@huusd.org.

School News:

  • Please remember to do the health screening for your students before you let them off here at school.
    • There is an email sent each morning at 6:45ish with a link, and you can also find a link to pick up patrol on our website moretownschool.org.
    • I find it easiest to have open on my phone- an app can be downloaded from the website too.

On behalf of the Friends of ECO at Moretown School, Inc., we would like to thank the Robbins de Beaumont Foundation for awarding this grant to the Moretown School E.C.O. (Educating Children Outdoors) Program. This money, along with private and public support will help expand and sustain ECO at Moretown Elementary School for years to come.

It all started with our first ECO Forest Festival event held last February! Due to the success of this event and the overwhelming community support, we were invited to submit a grant proposal to the Robbins de Beaumont Foundation. We are thrilled to share this exciting news with the Moretown community!

We will be hosting a “Blue Sky” visionary meeting very soon to discuss next steps and big dreams for our school community. Please let us know if you are interested in being a part of this.

Hannah's House is hosting a weekly "Parent Check-In" every Wednesday at 6:15 PM in January.  There is no commitment to attend weekly. Kevin Gallagher, MS, LCMHC, NCC will be joining us in mid January, otherwise it will be facilitated by Hannah's House.
Parenting isn't easy, especially in the midst of a pandemic. Hannah's House is hosting a weekly online gathering during the month of January where parents (and all guardians of children) can come together in a stress-free way. We can share tips, vent, ask for help from one another and most importantly, remember that we are not alone. It will be informal and open to all. Put your comfy clothes on, grab a beverage and join us!
