THANK YOU to those of you who have submitted your students’ forms online. We now have over 25% participation!

If you have not submitted your students’ forms yet, please take a few minutes to do so; we need to ensure we have the most thorough, up-to-date student information and parent/guardian contact information.

Remember, we are more than happy to help. The district website has a page about online registration: https://wwsu.org/online-registration. If you need help creating or accessing your PowerSchool Parent Account, call your school registrar.

Thank you for your prompt attention on this important matter.

  • Health Headlines:

    • Hello Parents,
This is just a reminder that cough drops sent in from home, need to kept in the nurse's office for students PreK-grade 2. In a large group of younger children, something so innocent, as you know, can become a choking hazard.
When a student in these grades needs a cough drop, teachers know to send the student with a book, while they have the cough drop in a quiet supervised setting. We prefer to be proactive rather than have to be reactive. :)
We do have generic cough drops available in the Health Office, but if you prefer to send your child with a special brand, please ask them to drop them off in the Main Office. Their name will be placed on the package and placed with the others in the locked cabinet in the Health Office for when they are needed.
      Thank you for your cooperation,
      Jean
  • Calendar Updates:

Halloween
With October comin’ in hot, we are of course gearing up for our annual Halloween Party and village treat or treating.  The candy generously distributed by our village homes is provided by donation from many of our community members.  To that end, we would like to begin accepting donations on October 1st to be prepared to distribute to our town participants the week before Halloween (starting on the 22nd). [Please contact Mandy Couturier if you do not intend to be included in the village treat distribution].   The annual Halloween party will be on Wednesday, October 31st at the Moretown School.

PTO News
Thanks to all who attended the September PTO meeting and for those who could not make it (we understand hectic schedules) here’s a quick update.
ECO/Winter Sports clothing drive:  Kicking off October 3rd at the open house we will begin a winter sports clothing drive.  This is intended to meet certain warm/dry clothing needs which arise from the ECO and Winter Sports Programs.  We ask that as you transition into fall and winter items at home that you consider donating gently used  items your children might have outgrown.  Items needed are: waterproof pants (snow and rain), waterproof gloves and mittens, waterproof boots (winter and otherwise), wool blend socks and waterproof jackets.  Please bring items to the Open House on October 3rd to the PTO table and look for a future announcement on additional drop sites and times.
Halloween: The Halloween party is on for October 31st at Moretown School.  The party will begin at 5:30 to be followed by trick or treating in the village.  If you’d like to contribute to treats to provide to the villagers please drop them at the Main Office in the treats for donation box beginning October 1st.  If you’d like to help with the party please email the PTO at moretownpto@gmail.com
PTO Announcements:  We recognize that not everyone can attend every meeting (or even any) but perhaps would like to be involved in other ways.  In a few weeks please begin to look for announcements and information from the PTO on the “PTO Announcement” board which will be located just inside the front doors of the school.  Additionally, we’ll be sending out a survey to glean some feedback from your favorite or events/fundraisers, please look for that in the coming weeks as well.   Please email the PTO at any time if you have any questions  moretownpto@gmail.com.

Moretown School Update Sept 21, 2018

Our staff listed the words that came to mind when thinking of MES... is the word that comes to your mind in there?

School Notes:

  • What a week it was. Everyone is settling in well as the last moments of summer dwindle down and official autumn is on the horizon.
  • We had a fire drill and a bus evacuation drill today and they both went wonderfully.  I am impressed by this crew (students and staff)!

  • All that Jazz
  • unnamed.jpg
  • The 2018-19 Moretown band and lessons program is up and running! 5th and 6th graders will be piloting an online practicing program this year called Smartmusic that will include a tech element that is new and motivating for students while serving to further align our district band curriculum.
  • Monster Mash

Hello Moretown Community,

‘Tiz I, The Book M0nster. I just wanted to pass along some information for David (our new teacher librarian) who is getting settled in the library. First, he wanted me to say thank you to the whole Moretown Community for being so warm and welcoming and that your kids are fantastic. He is loving the library and getting to work with all of the kids and classes.
    • In PK - 2 the kids have been working on getting to know the library. Where to find books, how to use shelf markers, how to checkout on their own and basic parts of a book. PK-2 has also done a mini author study of Jan thomas and her books as well as engaging in interactive read alouds, singing songs, rhyming words, the letter B for butterfly, counting to ten and of corse, bubbles.
    • The songs we learned/sang were The Banana Song, Sleeping Bunnies, Head Shoulders knees and Toes and The Hokey Pokey.
    • Here are some of the books we have shared:

    • In Grades 3-6 the kids have been working on basic library operations as well as cooperative learning challenges. They have shared a couple of stories and interactive read alouds, the focus being on reading with expression. The 3rd graders are currently getting some additional lessons on chromebook use, digital citizenship and digital tools that will be ongoing throughout the year. The 4th -6th will be getting digital citizenship and digital tools lessons in the near future. 5th and 6th graders are also doing library Jeopardy.
    • Some of the books we've shared are:

Library Jeopardy board

    • Lastly, the library could use your help in a few different areas ranging from shelving to displays and everything in between. If you have any extra time (even five or ten minutes helps before or after school) we would love to have you volunteer. If you have a weak spot and are open to bribes please let us know and we will do our best to entice you.

  • Bonjour
    • Why is my child watching videos in French class? You may have heard from your child that they watched a video in French class. Videos are a wonderful tool for language acquisition. Language teachers call this “Movie Talk.”  When I show a video in class it is usually between 1 and 4 minutes and is always appropriate for their age. It is muted so I can narrate what is happening and ask the class questions. Action videos often have a lot of repetition so it is a great way for students to hear the same words repeatedly without getting bored. The 5th and 6th graders watched a video called Jurassic Parkour (a humorous plug for the latest Jurassic Park movie). The 3rd and 4th graders watched a Simon’s Cat video (Icecapade). The first and second graders will be watching a Simon’s Cat video as well. These can be found online but there are often advertisements on the side, something I avoid by using full screen. If your child wants to show you them I would suggest you supervise their search. It would be a great way for them to demonstrate to you what they can do with their French. Remember, however, that understanding comes before speaking so, though your child may not be able to narrate the story they can probably understand most or all of my narration.

HUUSD School Board News:

  • Next board meeting Sept 26, 6:00-9:00pm
  • Thank you to all who attended the middle school visioning forum at Harwood on Sept 5. It was a great turnout and we appreciate the community interest in this work.

The forum included a recap of the middle school visioning workshop in June, and then presented 4 options - including estimated costs - for what we might do with grades 7 and 8 and the buildings that currently house them. This was followed by a Q&A period.

We welcome you to view the video and presentation materials (links below), and prepare to attend upcoming board meetings on Sept 19 and Oct 10 if you are interested in the ongoing discussion.

If you wish to provide feedback to the board beyond the limited time allotted at board meetings, we have set up an email address related specifically to this project: harwoodbondproject@wwsu.org. Please note that emails sent to this address will automatically feed into a public, view-only document -- the public will be able to see your letter. To view these letters, click http://bit.ly/2KcgHIy. Alternately, we invite you to send email or call school board members using the all-board email address CEN-HUUSDBOARD@WWSU.ORG (note: emails from the public are read and added to the wide mix of information being collected by the architects, Board members, and staff who are making recommendations and decisions. While we will not answer messages, all correspondence is read and considered!)

Moretown School Update August 31, 2018

    Greetings families and community,

We had an awesome fist week of school!  I have a lot to share, but most of all I want to thank all of you for sharing your children with us.  The very best part of my week was Friday morning when I was greeting students at the front door.  I was celebrating the fact that it was Friday as it was a full and wonderful week.  One student looked at me and replied, "I wish it was Tuesday."  Admittedly I was surprised, so I asked why.  She responded, "It went by so fast, I just want to do it again."  Now there's a kid who loves it here as much as I do... and luckily for her and me, we get to do it all again next week.

I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend, enjoying the warm weather, time with each other and all that the community has to offer.

Library news from The Book M0nster

      Greetings Parents, Guardians and Families,

I am The Book M0nster. I help David (the new Teacher Librarian) in the library. Every now and again I will be passing along information. In that vein…

Do you like warm, cozy, comfortable spaces? How about music and order or numbers and letters? Or better yet books, glorious books! If so we have an amazing opportunity for you.

Today we are looking for volunteers who would like to help in the library. As one of the heart centers of the school it is important that we keep materials up to date and out on the shelves as quickly as possible. By doing this we can get more books and materials into the hands of kids quickly. Since David will be in and out of the library teaching classes one of the most helpful supports would be to have a few people who would like to be responsible for shelving books and keeping order in the library. You would be trained in how to do this and perhaps even be bribed with chocolate.

If this is an opportunity you would like to take advantage of please email David or The Book Monster at dgreen-leibovitz@wwsu.org Training will be held in the Moretown School Library on Thursday September 13th from 8:00am-9:00am (it will most likely not take the whole time) and again in the afternoon from 2:30pm-3:30pm. If you are interested but neither of these times work for you please contact us and we will work something else out.

Lastly, if you have never volunteered before at the Moretown School there is a process you need to go through at the district office (background check and fingerprints). While this might be more time consuming or seem silly to you please know that the library and the school as a whole is committed to the social, emotional, academic and physical safety of the kids which is why this process is in place. You can contact Laura Titus at the district office at 803-583-7953.

      Have a fantastic day,
      David and The Book M0nster
