Our staff listed the words that came to mind when thinking of MES... is the word that comes to your mind in there? |
School Notes:
- What a week it was. Everyone is settling in well as the last moments of summer dwindle down and official autumn is on the horizon.
- We had a fire drill and a bus evacuation drill today and they both went wonderfully. I am impressed by this crew (students and staff)!
- All that Jazz
- The 2018-19 Moretown band and lessons program is up and running! 5th and 6th graders will be piloting an online practicing program this year called Smartmusic that will include a tech element that is new and motivating for students while serving to further align our district band curriculum.
- Monster Mash
Hello Moretown Community,
‘Tiz I, The Book M0nster. I just wanted to pass along some information for David (our new teacher librarian) who is getting settled in the library. First, he wanted me to say thank you to the whole Moretown Community for being so warm and welcoming and that your kids are fantastic. He is loving the library and getting to work with all of the kids and classes.
- In PK - 2 the kids have been working on getting to know the library. Where to find books, how to use shelf markers, how to checkout on their own and basic parts of a book. PK-2 has also done a mini author study of Jan thomas and her books as well as engaging in interactive read alouds, singing songs, rhyming words, the letter B for butterfly, counting to ten and of corse, bubbles.
- The songs we learned/sang were The Banana Song, Sleeping Bunnies, Head Shoulders knees and Toes and The Hokey Pokey.
- Here are some of the books we have shared:
- In Grades 3-6 the kids have been working on basic library operations as well as cooperative learning challenges. They have shared a couple of stories and interactive read alouds, the focus being on reading with expression. The 3rd graders are currently getting some additional lessons on chromebook use, digital citizenship and digital tools that will be ongoing throughout the year. The 4th -6th will be getting digital citizenship and digital tools lessons in the near future. 5th and 6th graders are also doing library Jeopardy.
- Some of the books we've shared are:
Library Jeopardy board
- Lastly, the library could use your help in a few different areas ranging from shelving to displays and everything in between. If you have any extra time (even five or ten minutes helps before or after school) we would love to have you volunteer. If you have a weak spot and are open to bribes please let us know and we will do our best to entice you.
- Bonjour
- Why is my child watching videos in French class? You may have heard from your child that they watched a video in French class. Videos are a wonderful tool for language acquisition. Language teachers call this “Movie Talk.” When I show a video in class it is usually between 1 and 4 minutes and is always appropriate for their age. It is muted so I can narrate what is happening and ask the class questions. Action videos often have a lot of repetition so it is a great way for students to hear the same words repeatedly without getting bored. The 5th and 6th graders watched a video called Jurassic Parkour (a humorous plug for the latest Jurassic Park movie). The 3rd and 4th graders watched a Simon’s Cat video (Icecapade). The first and second graders will be watching a Simon’s Cat video as well. These can be found online but there are often advertisements on the side, something I avoid by using full screen. If your child wants to show you them I would suggest you supervise their search. It would be a great way for them to demonstrate to you what they can do with their French. Remember, however, that understanding comes before speaking so, though your child may not be able to narrate the story they can probably understand most or all of my narration.

The Moretown PTO would like to thank all of our volunteers, donors and supporters that came out for Morefest last Saturday! HUUSD School Board News:
- Next board meeting Sept 26, 6:00-9:00pm
- Thank you to all who attended the middle school visioning forum at Harwood on Sept 5. It was a great turnout and we appreciate the community interest in this work.
The forum included a recap of the middle school visioning workshop in June, and then presented 4 options - including estimated costs - for what we might do with grades 7 and 8 and the buildings that currently house them. This was followed by a Q&A period.
We welcome you to view the video and presentation materials (links below), and prepare to attend upcoming board meetings on Sept 19 and Oct 10 if you are interested in the ongoing discussion.
If you wish to provide feedback to the board beyond the limited time allotted at board meetings, we have set up an email address related specifically to this project: harwoodbondproject@wwsu.org. Please note that emails sent to this address will automatically feed into a public, view-only document -- the public will be able to see your letter. To view these letters, click http://bit.ly/2KcgHIy. Alternately, we invite you to send email or call school board members using the all-board email address CEN-HUUSDBOARD@WWSU.ORG (note: emails from the public are read and added to the wide mix of information being collected by the architects, Board members, and staff who are making recommendations and decisions. While we will not answer messages, all correspondence is read and considered!)
