School News:

June 1- Rabbit Rabbit All School Hike
We are excited to hike from school to South Hill again this year.  Thanks to the Greenbergs for their hospitality!  If you are interested in volunteering, please let m know.  If you are not already an approved volunteer, please start the process here: https://huusd.org/apply-to-volunteer

Bummer news,  Wally will not be joining us this fall.  I'm sad to report that he has made the tough decision that he cannot join us at MES.  We wish him all the best in his future.  The 1st/2nd grade position has been reposted and we are confident we will find another good fit.

Musical notes

Hello Moretown!

We are planning to do a non-traditional concert on the afternoon of Monday, June 6th at 1 p.m. in the school gym. We will feature the work that our K through 6 grade classes, our chorus, and our band students have been doing this year.

This is short notice, and with all of the uncertainty surrounding COVID it was difficult to find an evening that could work during this busy time of year, and so we are planning to video the event and put up a link to share with families.

Next year, we will pick the date in September so we can be sure to include all family members who are willing and able to participate.

Please join us if you are able.

Thank you!

Introducing some new faces for the fall!!!

Hi, Moretown Elementary School!

My name is Mr. Wally, I’m going to be a 1st/2nd grade teacher this fall. I am so excited to become a part of such a lovely community.

A little bit about myself- I am a recent graduate of UVM where I studied Early Childhood Education, and have spent many years working with children of all ages. In my free time I love to paint, play volleyball, spend time with friends, or just lay in the sun. I also enjoy spoiling my cat, Simon, with little tastes of “human food” that he can’t seem to resist.

I am so grateful to have the opportunity to work with the students and families at MES, and look forward to learning, adventuring, creating, and finding joy with the children everyday!

Thanks so much!

Wally

Sarah Thompson- Grades 1 and 2

My name is Sarah Thompson, this will be my third year teaching. I’ve taught kindergarten and third grade and I’m so excited to teach first and second grade! I live in south Burlington with my 2 cats Gus and Jerry and when I’m not working I love to spend time in my hammock reading by the lake!

Phil Stolz- School Nurse

My name is Phil Stolz and I will be the school nurse at Moretown.

This will be my third year as a school nurse and I was lastly at Harwood Union. I previously held positions at University of Vermont Health Network Home Health and Hospice as a home health nurse and the University of Vermont Medical Center operating room as an operating room nurse. My undergraduate degree is from Norwich as well as my graduate degree in nursing education. I teach part time at the Community College of Vermont.

I look forward to working with each and every one of your children throughout the school years they are at Moretown. I hope to gain theirs and your trust throughout the years and work in a collaborative effort to promote health, wellness and education with them. I believe that a good healthy relationship between the school nurse and the families is in the best interest of the students and their health promotion and well-being.

As the end of the school year closes and the beginning of next school year starts you’ll be receiving your yearly forms in the mail that include updates of their health information as well as immunization form if your child has an exemptions and I encourage you to get those in as soon as possible so we can work on making sure your child has everything they need and set in place.

Thank you so much for your time in reading this and I look forward to speaking with everyone this year.

Library
The Moretown Librarian Cory Stephenson will be speaking to students about their summer reading programs on Wednesday, May 25 during library classes.
Please return all library books by Friday, June 3rd.

Notes from the Health Office

As you may have heard (or seen on the district site)  COVID is still present in our community.  We suggest testing your child if they may have been exposed or are showing symptoms.  More information on how and when to test can be found on the HUUSD website:

Rapid tests are available from the school. Please contact the school if you need any!

Sun Protection

Moretown School students spend a lot of time outside in good weather. To decrease their risk of sunburn and skin cancer, apply sunscreen to areas of their skin that will be exposed to the sun BEFORE they leave for school in the morning. Children should not be carrying sunscreen or any other medication or skin treatment to school in their backpacks.  Please let the nurse know if there are medical concerns around sun or heat exposure.

Facts about sunscreen:

SPF. Sunscreens are assigned a sun protection factor (SPF), which is a number that rates how well they block UV rays. Higher numbers indicate more protection. You should use a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher.

A good application of sunscreen before school will last several hours

Lotions or creams are the most effective and safest. Spray on sunscreens may contain chemicals that are harmful to the lungs if inhaled.

Expiration date. Check the sunscreen’s expiration date. Sunscreen without an expiration date has a shelf life of no more than 3 years. Its shelf life is shorter if it has been exposed to high temperatures.

Additional sun protection in the form of hats, light long sleeved shirts and long pants will help protect your child from the sun’s harmful rays.

Moretown Recreation Survey 2022
Recreation takes on many forms, from team sports to a having a favorite sit-spot in the woods or on the river to reflect and relax. This survey is designed by the Moretown Recreation Committee to learn more about how we as individuals in a larger community recreate; what you value, what you use today, and what resources we should build, protect, and strengthen.

Please take a few minutes to complete this survey. Your ideas and concerns will influence our collective future.

Thank you for your participation,

School News:

Hello Moretown Community,

We are in need of spare clothing for when our students need to change.

Our supply is very low for size 5-14 pants (unisex please, and no leggings).  Sweat pants, jeans, elastic waistband pants are all welcome.
We're also in need of shirts  in sizes 8-young teen.
We have limited storage room, so we're asking for clothing in colors that any child would feel comfortable wearing.

We have a great supply of boots for our younger students, but we are in need of some spare winter and spring boots for our older students--adult size 6 and up.

If you have items that match these descriptions that your family has outgrown, we'd very much appreciate your donation to our spare clothing closet.
Thank you!

MRV Libraries 3rd Annual T-Shirt Collaboration

Submissions due Friday, 5/6

If you're a fan of underwater creatures of all kinds, you'll be excited to hear that the theme of this year's MRV Libraries' Summer Learning Program is "Oceans of Possibilities". And, we need your help to create this year's collaborative T-shirt design!

We invite you to draw your favorite aquatic critter, whether it lives in a vernal pool, the ocean, or somewhere in between! Stop by for a form or access it online here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1X7bq4NjueytYtch_6D1VGan-H-_CsFDY/view?usp=sharing

We'll edit all submissions into one big underwater scene that will be printed on T-shirts available for purchase this summer. All contributing artists may buy a shirt at a discount. Proceeds from this project go toward future summer programming.
